If you hide your smile because you’re self-conscious of your stained, chipped, disproportionately small, or otherwise imperfect teeth, it may be time for a Smile Makeover. At Smile Designers in San Diego, we’re dedicated to helping our patients optimize their oral health and maximize the aesthetic beauty of their smiles, and we would love to do the same for you. The Smile Makeover isn’t just a feel-good procedure. It can actually change the way you feel about yourself, the way you feel about the world, and how others look at you. Here’s what you need to know about the Smile Makeover.
A Smile Makeover is a combination of one or more cosmetic dental procedures aimed at improving the appearance of an individual’s smile. Cosmetic dental procedures can correct a wide range of aesthetic concerns, including stained teeth, spacing issues, tooth asymmetry, tooth proportion, gummy smile, chipped or cracked teeth, and more. Depending on the needs of the individual, a Smile Makeover may also involve some functional and structural work, such as dental implants, dental bridges, or other dental restoration treatments. The main goal of the Smile Makeover is to enhance the smile’s beauty, radiance, and overall aesthetic appeal.
At Smile Designers, every Smile Makeover begins with a personalized consultation with Dr. Armin Hage. The process includes several key steps to ensure you receive a customized treatment plan and fully understand what to expect.
If you choose to move forward, Dr. Hage will perform a full dental evaluation. This may happen during the same appointment or be scheduled for a later date.
The exam may include:
Using advanced digital imaging technology, you may even see a preview of your expected results before treatment begins.
Dr. Hage prioritizes clear communication throughout the entire process. He will explain your treatment timeline, expected results, and answer any remaining questions so you feel confident moving forward.
Once your plan is finalized, Dr. Hage will let you know:
Smile Makeovers are completely customized to each person, so the exact combination of cosmetic dental procedures included with a Smile Makeover will differ from one individual to another. In general, however, Smile Makeovers commonly include some combination of one or more of the following treatments:
Professional teeth whitening can help remove stains and restore natural brilliance to your smile safely and efficiently.
A small, ultra thin porcelain shell is bonded to the surface of your "smile teeth," covering cracks, stains, chips, and other imperfections. Natural-Looking Veneers are customized for a perfect fit and matched for a perfect color, so they look and feel natural.
The cosmetic dental bonding process involves molding resin over the tooth to correct minor imperfections such as chips, stains, gaps, and tooth asymmetry while also reinforcing the tooth structure.
Dental implants, dental crowns, dental bridges, and other tooth replacement options restore the fullness of your smile by filling in the distracting gaps left behind by missing teeth.
Teeth lengthening techniques, gum surgery, laser treatment, and other procedures designed to reduce gum prominence can help achieve a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.
Some Smile Makeover candidates will need only two or three simple procedures to achieve their smile goals, while others will require a more extensive, longer term process involving several procedures.
Every Smile Makeover is different. Not only do the combinations of procedures vary from person to person, but the complexity of each procedure will vary as well. The only way to know for sure how much your Smile Makeover will cost is to schedule a consultation and follow through with the exam so you know exactly which procedures you need.
From there, you can discuss the cost with your dentist. While Smile Makeovers are designed to enhance your smile’s appearance, your dentist may recommend some of the procedures for functional or structural purposes, in which case they may be covered by your dental insurance plan. If, on the other hand, all of the procedures are cosmetic only, you may be able to work out a financing plan or spread out the procedures over a period of time rather than undergoing them all at once.

For most patients, a full smile makeover takes 2 to 3 main appointments over a span of 3 to 4 weeks. However, the timeline depends entirely on the complexity of your plan.
Appointment 1: The Design & Consultation. We take digital impressions, photos, and X-rays. This is where we use Digital Smile Design to show you a "test drive" of your new look.
Appointment 2: The Preparation. We prepare your teeth and place high-quality temporary restorations. You’ll leave this appointment with a preview of your final smile.
Appointment 3: The Reveal. Once your custom porcelain or composite work is ready, we bond it to your teeth, make final adjustments to your bite, and polish everything to a natural shine.
While a smile makeover provides long-lasting results, it is considered "long-term" rather than "lifelong." With proper care, the components of your makeover can last for decades.
Think of it this way: Veneers are a tool, while a smile makeover is the entire project.
Dental Veneers: These are individual thin shells of porcelain bonded to the front of specific teeth to hide chips, gaps, or stains. You can get veneers without having a full "makeover."
Smile Makeover: This is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary plan tailored to your facial features. It may use veneers on the front teeth, but it often combines them with other treatments like:
